Blackheads are the small bumps on the body. Mainly they appear on face but they can be seen even on shoulders, back, hands, arms, legs, chests or on the neck.
How To Get Rid of Blackheads
The main reason behind it is that when the opening of our hair follicles starts developing plug or clog. In our body, every follicle contains a hair and a gland (sebaceous gland) which help to produce some oil in our body. This oil which is also known as Sebum helps to maintain our body softness.
What Are The Main Reasons or Causes Behind Blackheads?
This oil and the dead skin cells start closing the skin follicles, then a bump like structure appears known as comedo. If the skin stayed closed over the comedo, it is known as Whitehead. And if the skin over the comedo opens or come into contact with air. Then it starts looking black or it is also known as Blackheads.
Main reasons which increase the chances of developing Blackheads are:
There is a very easy and simple answer that why blackheads appear: hormones. It the very common factor which causes blackhead. For example when sebum is overproduced, which comes in hormonal changes. The hormonal changes occur mainly at the time of puberty. When these hormonal changes appear such as overproduction of sebum etc.
The changes in hormones, people experienced it at the time of puberty. And the most common factor is the overproduction of sebum (the oil which found under the surface of our skin).
When the children start to reach age 12 or 13 their body start developing the more complex hormones and organs. These changes in hormones lead to produce more sebum in there body and results in blackheads. If the excess sebum from their body starts interacting with dead cells it results in blackheads.
In many women, the blackhead increases at the time of periods. This increase in blackheads is due to fluctuation in hormones. At the time of periods women, body estrogen levels start decreasing and progesterone level starts increasing.
When the progesterone start increases, the oil glands in their body produces more sebum. Menstruation-related blackhead appears usually at the beginning of woman’s period. Once the period ends their progesterone level adjusted to normal level.
There are many women who found that blackhead starts appearing and becoming worsen in pregnancy. The blackhead appears mainly around at 6th week of pregnancy. Change in the hormones during the pregnancy may increase the androgen level, which is the oil which indicates that the excess production of sebum. And it leads to blackheads.
Many dermatologists and researchers have seen the relation between blackheads and stress. Stress is the cause because it accelerates the overproduction of oil in our body.
When someone is going through stress, he/she produces more cortisol and androgens which is the cause of blackheads. The woman may get more blackheads in stress than man. Because in woman the percentage of cortisol and androgen in stress is higher than man.
Some other reasons are
- Increase in the Acne bacteria (Propionibacterium) on our skin.
- When the dead skin on our body does not shed on time to time and starting the irritation over hair follicles.
- Taking drugs that affect bodies such as lithium androgens or corticosteroids.
- Due to living in high Humidity area where the number of dust particles is high.
- From heavy exercises which result in sweating and lead to Blackheads.
- Due to shaving which opens the follicles.
- Hormonal Disorder.
- High dose of medicines.
- Genetic Problem.
Around the world, many people say or believe that when someone drinks or eat oily products it will lead to Blackheads. Many products such as dairy items which are in highly concentrated in fat may lead to Whiteheads or Blackheads. But this is not proven by any researcher or scientist. And they don’t think that this is the reason behind Whiteheads or Blackheads.
Why were the Blackheads on our body are Black?
Blackheads get this name from the dark bump on the top of the comedo. But this name is not correct because these bumps appear in a different range of colours such as grey, brown, yellow and the black. Many peoples think that these different shades of colours appear on comedo due to dirt in the pores, but the main reason behind is oxidation.
When pigment (Melanin) found in our oil glands – comes into contact with air it starts getting oxidised. This oxidisation turns our blackheads into dark black colour. If this oxidisation does not take place, blackheads look more yellowish in colour.
Different Types of Blackheads
1. Gaint Comedo
Gaint comedo’s are in very large sizes and we can see them easily. From the research of Primary Care Dermatology Society, it is said that this huge comedo occurs due to the increased production of corneocytes that line the sebaceous duct.
But there is no strong data behind this, which confirm this reason. These huge comedo found in the different parts of the body such as chest, back or face. These huge comedo occur mainly in the middle-aged or in the older people.
2. Nevus Comedonicus
Nevus Comedonicus is also known as super blackheads or spreading blackheads. It is a very rare condition which was first seen in 1895. They may look like huge blackheads or comedones.
This type of blackheads appears due to the abnormalities of our nervous system. This condition occurs when the follicular structure is unable to form sebaceous glands. And terminal hair, which leaves them to produce only the soft keratin.
And this keratin makes up the pores and resulted in the dark colour. These type of blackheads mainly appear in the early age of life in man and woman. But these cases also observed in some elder people.
Treatments which do not affect Blackheads
Around the world, people mostly start self-extraction of their blackheads. But it just worsens your blackheads. And when you extract your blackheads on daily basis. Then your skin starts becoming more and more sensitive. And some people get infections during the extraction of blackheads.
It is a very popular method among people. But these strips are not good for treating blackheads. These strips only worsen the case. After using strips your blackheads start coming on the regular basis.
Many people believe that blackheads may be cured by washing and cleaning roughly. But it might worsen the case and may lead to infections.
Do not use Benzyl Peroxide
When it comes to blackheads, people start thinking about those products which contain benzoyl peroxide. The main problem with the benzoyl product is that it does not affect the blackheads. Benzoyl peroxide uses to reduce the swelling.
And it helps to get rid of those bacterias which are under the pimples. However, blackheads are not swellings and they also not caused due to bacterias. So benzoyl peroxide does not affect the blackheads at all.
